아마도예술공간은 2013년 6월 개관한 비영리 예술단체다. 본 공간은 좁게는 시각 중심, 결과 중시에 편향된 예술 제도 및 시장의 흐름, 넓게는 목적지향성과 효용성에 편향된 당대적 문화-사회-경제적 속도의 대안으로서 ‘과정 중시와 담론 발생, 커뮤니케이션과 비평의 활성화’를 목적으로 하는 커뮤니티 공간이다.

아마도예술공간은 시각예술 비평과 큐레이팅 분야에서 활동하는 전문 인력들에 의해 시각 예술의 담론과 비평 활성화를 도모하고자 설립되었다. 설립 목적에 발 맞추어 아마도예술공간은 그간 공모와 추천을 통해 창작과 기획의 과정에 보다 초점을 맞추는 <아마도애뉴얼날레_목하진행중>을 정기적으로 진행해오고 있다. 더불어 당대적으로 논의가 부족했던 기획자에 대한 지원 활성화를 위한 <아마도전시기획상>, 동시대 시각 예술 내 사진 매체의 의미에 주목하는 <아마도사진상> 매년 수여해왔다. 또한 시각 예술의 언어로 작가적 실험을 지속하며 동시대를 탐구하는 작가들의 개인전, 전시의 방법론과 사회적 의제를 고민하는 기획전을 개최해왔다.

3층 구조의 주택을 개조한 아마도예술공간은 대안적이며 창조적, 과정중심적 실천이 촉발될 수 있는 공간으로  지속 활용될 예정이다. 2024년부터는 <아마도사진상>의 다소 매체특정적 논의으로부터 확장하여 수행성, 실험성, 창의성을 바탕으로 동시대 시각예술의 전방위 분야에서 다양한 가능성을 탐색하고 있는 예술인을 위한 <아마도작가상>을 신설 시행한다. 나아가 아마도예술공간은 전시 뿐만 아니라, 아마도랩(구 아마도예술연구소)의 이름 하에 토크와 워크숍, 스터디, 스크리닝, 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 형식을 경유한 실천들 역시 수용해나가고자 한다. 이를 통해 여러 맥락의 주체들이 모여 예술과 비예술 또는 아마도 경계가 (불)분명한 행위와 교류를 통해 대화와 사유를 공유하며 미적 가치관을 나눌 수 있는 열린 공동체를 촉발코자 한다.

‘Amado Art Space’ is a non-profit art organization that opened in June 2013. This space is a community space aimed at “stimulating process-oriented practice, discourse, communication and critics” as an alternative to the contemporary art system and market trends biased toward visually-result-oriented, and contemporary cultural-social-economic speed biased toward purpose-oriented and utility.

The Amado Art Space was established to promote the discourse and criticism of visual art by professionals working in the field of visual art criticism and curating. In line with the purpose of its establishment, the Amado Art Space has been regularly conducting “Amado Annualnale” which focuses more on the process of creation and curating. In addition, the “Amado Exhibition Award” to revitalize support for Curators who lacked discussion at the time and the “Amado Photography Award,” which focuses on the meaning of the medium in contemporary visual art and culture, have also been awarded yearly. The space has also held individual exhibitions of artists exploring contemporarities while continuing artistic experiments in the language of visual art, and exhibitions to consider the methodology and social agenda of the exhibition.

The Amado Art Space, which has been renovated from a three-story house, will continue to be used as a space where alternative, creative and process-oriented practices can be triggered. Starting in 2024, “Amado Artist Award” will be expanded from somewhat media-specific discussions of the “Amado Photography Award” to the newly implement “Amado Artist Award” for artists who are exploring various possibilities in all fields of contemporary visual arts based on practiceness, experimentation, and creativity. Furthermore, the Amado Art Space intends to contain not only exhibitions but also practices through various forms such as talks, workshops, studies, screening, and performances under the name of AmadoLAB (formerly Amado Art Laboratory). Through this, it is intended to trigger an open community where subjects of various contexts can gather to share conversations, thoughts, and aesthetic values through practices and exchanges that are (un)clear in boundaries between art and non-art.
