[AmadoLab 24'] Gyukjuro✕AmadoLab <n Campfires - Discovering the Audience Community> Workshop

“Finding the Audience Community” is one of the three programs in the Gyukjuro✕ AmadoLab workshop series, . This particular workshop is an experiment in expanding points of contact between Amado Art Space and its audience through the distribution of flyers. Going beyond mere promotion, the initiative was conceived as a way to sow the “sparks” that may ignite future audience communities.

The program consists of two phases: the first involved distributing a “Mental Map” flyer, while the second is an ongoing experiment taking place on the second floor of Amado Art Space.

◼ Phase 1 Flyer: Scattering Sparks on the Streets
Every two weeks, participants distributed the Phase 1 flyer within a 20-minute walking radius of Amado Art Space. The front side of the flyer featured a “Mental Map of the Amado Art Space Neighborhood,” created by three participants on a Gyukjuro basis, accompanied by excerpts from National Geographic’s educational materials. These maps reflect the subjective experiences of individuals walking through the area and explore spatial interpretation through the act of “map drawing.” The reverse side of the flyer introduced the workshop series co-organized by Gyukjuro and AmadoLab.

- Distribution Date: Sunday, October 13, 2024
- Distribution Area: Within a 20-minute walking distance from Amado Art Space

◼ Phase 2 Flyer: Documenting the Traces of Viewers
Beginning in December 2024, Phase 2 flyers have been placed inside Amado Art Space. Designed as worksheets, these flyers include blank spaces where visitors can draw their personal routes to the venue. These records go beyond simply tracing paths of movement; they collectively form an archive that reflects the dynamics of the surrounding neighborhood and the experience of visiting exhibitions (see image above). The project continues throughout 2025 at the entrance of the 2nd floor of Amado Art Space.

- Display Period: December 2024 – December 2025
- Display Location: Ground floor entrance of Amado Art Space

Both the first and second phase flyers incorporate sentences from National Geographic’s educational materials on “Map drawing” (see Link 1 below). This approach explores the nuances of educational language and aligns with Gyuckjuro’s ongoing methods of inviting audience participation. Ultimately, “Finding the Audience Community” is an experiment in building, or reimagining, relationships between art spaces and their viewers.

Whether those who receive the flyers will actually visit Amado Art Space, or whether those who encounter the flyers within the space will leave their own traces, remains uncertain. Yet we hope that these small pieces of paper may serve as starting points for forming a new audience community.

◼ After the Flyer Distribution: The Continuation of the Archive and Observations (2025)

Following the second flyer distribution, the archive continued throughout 2025, with the flyers made available at the ground-floor entrance of Amado Art Space. A total of 51 visitor records were collected, leaving traces on paper of the journeys taken by visitors who arrived at Amado Art Space from different starting points and along different routes. While reviewing the accumulated records, several observations stood out.

First, records created by international visitors were found. As Amado Art Space is located in an area frequently visited by tourists, many of their flyers documented not only the route to the art space but also places and scenes they encountered while traveling in Korea and Seoul. In this way, traces of the visit extended beyond the exhibition space to become records of journeys through the city.

Second, events that took place around Amado Art Space during particular periods became intertwined with individual routes and remained embedded in the records. This suggested the possibility of the flyers functioning as an archive of place, preserving not only personal movement but also the changing circumstances of the surrounding neighborhood.

Third, the printed flyers were produced on different colors of paper according to the season. These shifts in color may serve as subtle temporal markers, indicating when the records were accumulated.

Fourth, some pages were used not simply as spatial representations but in the free and casual manner of a guestbook. Yet, guided by the prompt "Mental Map," many participants left not only brief impressions of their visit but also personal reflections, inner concerns, and imagined landscapes, making these contributions particularly memorable.

※ The visitor records produced through the voluntary participation of visitors following the second flyer distribution in December 2024 will be bound into a binder and placed at the ground-floor entrance of Amado Art Space, where they will be freely available for browsing until July 21. They are also available online via the link below.
