김천수 개인전 《시간이 흐른다고 미래가 되지 않는다》

김천수의 이번 개인전을 추동하는 명제는 피터 틸(Peter Thiel)의 저서 『제로 투 원(Zero to One)』에 등장하는 “시간이 흐른다고 미래가 되지는 않는다”는 문구다. 다만 사진(술)을 경유해 기술 발전 신화에 내재된 사회 구조의 불안전성을 탐구해 온 김천수는, 이 문구에 잔존하는 기술지상주의적 신념을 의심하며 이를 역설적으로 전유한다.

작가가 이번 전시에서 선보이는 신작 〈서울〉 연작을 비롯해 지난 10년간 작업해 온 〈AI Mod〉, 〈가리왕산〉, 〈알프스 민트색 소파〉 등 근작 및 미발표 작품 등 이번 전시에서 선보이는 연작들은 모두 기묘한 방식으로 뒤틀려 있다. 예컨대 디지털 카메라로 찍힌 풍경은 왜곡되어 복제되고, 오래된 흑백 인화 기법에 갇혀 점차 흐려지거나 흰 물질에 덮여 일부를 소실한다. 첨단기술 박람회에서 과거의 신식 사진기로 찍은 대상이라곤 흠집과 부스러기뿐이고, 그 이미지조차 폐기가 예정되어 있다. 또 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 기록했다는 풍경과 사물은 언제 기입되었는지 짚어낼 수 없이 이상한 시간대를 맴돈다.

작가의 환형적 물음표는 우리에게 이르러 서순을 바꾸고 첨언해 되묻길 바라는 듯하다. ‘미래가 되려면 시간은 어떻게 흘러야 하는가?’

The proposition driving Chunsoo Kim’s current solo exhibition is a phrase from Peter Thiel’s book Zero to One: “The Future Won’t Happen on Its Own.” However, Kim—who has long explored the instability of social structures inherent in the myth of technological progress through the medium of photography—views the techno-utopian belief remaining in this phrase with skepticism, paradoxically appropriating it for his own purposes.

The various series presented in this exhibition—including his new series Seoul, as well as recent and unreleased works from the past decade such as AI Mod, Gariwangsan, and Alps Mint Sofa—are all distorted in bizarre ways.

For instance, landscapes captured via digital cameras are distorted and replicated; confined within archaic black-and-white printing techniques, they gradually fade or become partially obliterated, smothered under a white substance. Objects captured by an old-fashioned camera at a high-tech exposition reveal nothing but scratches and debris, and even those images are destined for disposal. Furthermore, the landscapes and objects supposedly recorded over an extended period hover within an ambiguous temporal zone, rendering it impossible to pinpoint precisely when they were inscribed.

The artist’s circular questioning eventually reaches us, as if asking to be reordered, supplemented, and posed anew**:** ‘How must time flow to become the future?’
