제7회 아마도사진상 김신욱 개인전 《네시를 찾아서》

주변의 이미지를 수집하고 관찰하면서 무언가를 알아가는, 혹은 찾아가는 과정을 ‘자신’이 속해있는 상황에 깊이 개입하는 사진으로 담아내는 김신욱은 《네시를 찾아서》에서 네스호의 괴수, ‘네시’를 둘러싼 이야기로 그 세계를 확장한다. 전시는 형식적으로 아카이브 전시의 형태를 차용하지만 그러한 전시의 속성을 따르거나 작가적 시선으로 사건을 재구성하지 않는다. 전시 안에 구성된 이미지–사진 작업, 리서치 자료 등–는 상상력을 자극하는 매개체인 동시에 허구를 사실로써 존재하도록 작동시킨 믿음의 역사에 대한 언급과도 같다. 전시는 익숙한 이야기들과 신화가 가지고 있는 의미를 비틀어 봄으로써 ‘믿음’이란 어떤 과정을 통해 특정 장소와 대상에 발현되는지, 무엇이 그러한 믿음을 유지하고 작동하게 하는지에 대한 질문이며, 이야기가 어떻게 전설이 되고 신화가 되며, ‘믿음’으로 이어지는지에 대한 고찰이다. 나아가 눈에 보이지 않는 신화가 어떻게 실제 장소에 스며들었고 어떤 장치들이 설계되고 파생되어 그것을 상상하도록 하였는지 탐구하여 특정 대상에 대한 믿음, 사람들이 무언가를 믿는 이유 그 자체를 환기시킨다.

In In Search of Nessie, Shinwook Kim, whose photography is characterized by a deep involvement in the situation in which he finds himself while collecting and observing the images around him, expands his world to the story surrounding the Loch Ness monster, Nessie. While the exhibition takes on the formal structure of an archival exhibition, it diverges from the typical attributes associated with such displays and does not reconstruct events from an authorial perspective. The images presented in the exhibition, including photographic works and research materials, serve as both a medium to stimulate the imagination and a reference to the historical context of belief, blurring the line between fiction and reality. By distorting the meaning of familiar stories and myths, the exhibition raises questions about the process by which ‘belief’ is manifested in specific places and objects, and what sustains and operates such beliefs. Additionally, it delves into how stories transform into legends, myths, and ‘beliefs.’ Furthermore, the exhibition explores how invisible myths permeate tangible locations and examines the devices designed and derived to envision them, thereby illuminating the very nature of belief in certain objects and why people believe in them.
