최원정 개인전 《V370A: 심층 시간 너머》

《V370A: 심층 시간 너머》는 8년 만에 한국에서 열리는 최원정의 여덟 번째 개인전이다. 지난 20여 년 동안 최원정은 미국으로 이주한 경험을 바탕으로, 시·공간을 뛰어넘어 마주한 세계와 상호작용하며 스스로의 정체성을 진화시켜 왔다.

이번 전시에서 작가는 ‘심층 시간(Deep Time)’ 너머를 상상하며 혹독한 빙하기를 뚫고 살아 남은 초기 인류와 조우한다. 이들은 아프리카에서부터 동아시아로 이주 후 변이 유전자 ‘V370A’를 만들어냄으로써 극한의 환경에 적응하여 정착에 성공한 이들이다. 이러한 과학적 사실을 기반으로 작가는 인류의 이주, 적응, 진화에 대해 이전보다 첨예하게 고고학적이고 문화인류학적인 시각을 견지하면서도 새로운 이야기를 상상하는 표현을 지속한다. 긴 시간 동안 재료와 기법을 연구하며 구축한 조각적 방법론 위에서 초기 인류가 남긴 조각상, 생존과 적응의 흔적인 삽 모양 치아, 빙하기의 이주 궤적이나 문화적 정체성을 반영하는 고지도 등 역사적 유물이나 사실들은 시간의 지층이 쌓이듯 중첩되고 결합된다.

작가는 이러한 조형적 시도를 통해 심층 시간 너머의 과거와 현재를 잇고, 정체성이 고정된 것이 아니라 지속적으로 생성되는 과정임을 펼쳐 보인다. 나아가 다시금 극한의 기후 변화를 맞이한 현재, 우리가 어떻게 생존하여 미래로 나아갈 것인지에 관해 함께 상상해 볼 것을 제안한다.

V370A: Beyond Deep Time is WonJung Choi’s 8th solo exhibition in Korea, returning after eight years. Over the past two decades, Choi has drawn on her experience of immigrating to the United States to interact with worlds encountered across time and space, continually evolving her own sense of identity.

In this exhibition, the artist looks beyond “Deep Time” to encounter early humans who survived the harsh conditions of the Ice Age. Having migrated from Africa to East Asia, these people are envisioned as having successfully adapted to extreme environments and established themselves by evolving through the genetic variant “V370A.” Drawing on this scientific premise, Choi crafts new narratives, approaching human migration, adaptation, and evolution through a more incisive archaeological and cultural-anthropological lens than ever before.

Built upon a sculptural methodology developed through years of research into materials and techniques, historical artifacts and facts—including sculptures left by early humans, shovel-shaped incisors as traces of survival and adaptation, and ancient maps reflecting Ice Age migration routes and cultural identities—are layered and combined like strata of time.

Through these formal explorations, the artist connects a past far beyond deep time with the present, revealing identity not as something fixed, but as a process of continual becoming. Furthermore, at a time when we are once again confronting extreme climate change, she invites us to imagine together how we might survive and move toward the future.
