김방주 개인전 《그냥 생긴 기억》

아마도예술공간은 오는 10월 31일(금)부터 11월 30일(일)까지 김방주 작가의 개인전 《그냥 생긴 기억》을 개최한다.

몇 해 전, 김방주는 아버지로부터 집 한 채를 가득 채운 물건들을 떠맡게 되었다. 갑자기 건네받은 집과 용도를 알 수 없는 사물들은 숫자와 종류, 모든 면에서 압도적이었다. 그는 병환으로 쇠약해져가는 아버지의 신체와 질서를 잃은 사물들, 동시에 이들 모두를 돌보는 스스로를 받아들이는 초과적 상황과 시간을 보냈다. ‘이해한다’는 차원의 받아들임이라기보단, 되돌릴 수 없게 주어진 상황을 ‘받아넘기는’ 시간이었다. 다만 그 과정에서 김방주는, 마치 “거인 같았던” 아버지-사물-사건들을 조금씩이나마 더듬어 갈 수 있었다. 이제 그는 이것이 자신이 어찌할 수 없이 “그냥 생긴” 일이자 시간이었음을 인정하기로 했다.

그 시간 끝에 김방주는 이들을 ‘되돌려’ 놓기로 한다. 물론 이들의 발신지가 아닌 여기 이곳에. 사물들은 어떤 이해관계도 의도도 지니지 않고 주어진 채로, 다만 전시장을 넘어 다른 누군가-어딘가-무엇에게로 향할지도 모르는 방식으로 놓여 있을 것이다. 따라서 전시란 형식을 빌은 이 시공간은 어쩌면 다시 건넴의 자리이자 통로가 될지도 모른다. 작가 역시 이곳에 머물며 자신에게 주어진 것들, 자신을 이루는 것들을 떠나보내고 또 나누려 할 것이다. 아마 당신에게도.

Several years ago, Kim found himself confronted with a house filled with countless objects—things gathered without a clear purpose or pattern. Suddenly placed before him, the sheer number and ambiguity of these items were overwhelming. During that time, he faced the frailty of his father’s declining body, the disarray of the objects that surrounded him, and himself, caught in the act of caring for them all. It was not a matter of “understanding,” but rather of carrying through what could no longer be reversed.

Through this process, Kim began to trace, however faintly, the once “giant-like” presence of his father, the objects, and the events entangled around them. He has come to accept that all of this, those moments and matters, were simply what had “just come to be,” occurrences beyond his will or intention.

At the end of that time, Kim chooses to place them back into, not in their place of origin, but here, in this space and moment. The objects remain unclaimed by purpose or meaning, laid out as they are, perhaps ready to find their way toward someone, somewhere, or something beyond the exhibition. In this sense, the exhibition becomes a site or a passage through which the act of release takes place once again. Staying within this space, Kim seeks to let go of and share what has been given to him, what continues to constitute his being. Perhaps, with you as well.
